In the darkness of September 23, 1779, the frigate Bonhomme Richard battled HMS Serapis off the coast of England. Cannon fire shattered the night as thick clouds of gunpowder smoke rolled across the decks. Many of Jones’s guns were destroyed, and his ship was burning and taking on water, yet he refused to surrender.

As the battle raged, the air was filled with saltwater mist thrown high by crashing waves and cannonballs striking the sea. The scent of scorched timbers and charred oak barrels mixed with the smell of tarred rigging and weathered driftwood carried by the Atlantic wind.

When a British officer demanded Jones surrender, he answered with the words that would make him a legend: “I have not yet begun to fight!”

The fight continued for hours. Amid the chaos, sailors clung to ropes slick with seawater while the smell of spilled dark rum from shattered casks drifted below deck. The crew pressed on, fueled by courage and determination. In the officers’ quarters, traces of aged tobacco lingered from long nights spent planning the campaign.

By dawn, Serapis struck her colors. Jones had achieved one of the greatest naval victories of the American Revolution. As the smoke cleared, the rising sun cast light across the battered ships. The sharp brightness of bergamot peel and coconut lime evokes that fresh Atlantic morning, while warm cedar amber recalls the wooden decks and steadfast resolve of the sailors who fought there.
