D-Day June 6th, 1944 0600hrs

Dubbed operation Overlord, D-Day was and still is the largest sea-based invasion of an occupied country during a conflict. Originally set for June 5th, the invasion was postponed a day to inclement weather. Over 24000 American, British and Canadian Airborne troops dropped behind enemy lines the night before the actual beach landings happened. It was planned in complete secrecy for over a year. The Allied Command was headed up by Dwight D. Eisenhower. The allied used clever tactics of a Phony military, massing by the white cliffs of dover to make the Nazis think that the immense invasion was to come from there instead of the beaches of Normandy France.

The landing beaches were

-Juno

-Gold

-Sword

-Utah

-Omaha

The British and Canadian forces were to land Juno, Gold and Sword beaches while the American forces landed at Utah and Omaha beaches. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel that day. At the End of the 1st day of the invasion of France, there were at least 10,000 casualties with 4414 confirmed killed in Action. 

This was a major turning point in the European Theatre of war in WW2. The men who served in WW2 truly were the Greatest Generation
